What to have ready when you call
The more you can tell us up front, the faster we can zero in on the problem. Don't worry if you don't have all of this, just share what you know.
- The symptoms. What you're seeing, hearing, or smelling, and where. Stains, sounds, smells, wet spots, bill changes.
- When it started. Even a rough guess helps. After a freeze? After a storm? Gradually over months?
- A meter reading, if you can get one safely. Check the meter with everything off and note whether the dial moves.
- Photos. Snap pictures of stains, wet spots, or the meter if it's safe to do so. A photo of a stain's shape and location is genuinely useful.
- Access notes. Locked gates, crawlspace entrances, where the water heater and main shutoff are.
